In1972theBritish-AmericanTobaccoCompanys(parentofU.S.subsidiaryBrown&WilliamsonTobaccoCo.)U.S.retaildivision,BATUSInc.,boughtacontrollinginterestinKohlsCorp.,whichatthetimeoperated50grocerystores,sixdepartmentstores,threedrugstoresandthreeliquorstores.TheKohlfamily,ledbyAllenandHerbKohl,stayedontomanagethecompany.Thefamilyleftthemanagementin1979,andHerbKohlwentontobecomeaUnitedStatesSenatorandowneroftheMilwaukeeBucks.ThisfirmexpandedKohlspresencefrom10to39storesinWisconsin,IllinoisandIndiana.ThegrocerystoreswereeventuallysoldtoA&Pin1983,operatingunderthenameKohlsII,butthelastofthemwerelaterclosedin2003. Expansion发展 Agroupofinvestors,includingtheseniormanagement,purchasedthecompanyin1986,andthecompanyadded27morestoresinthenexttwoyears.In1988,thechainacquired26locationsfromChicago-basedMainStreet,gainingseveralstoresinChicagossuburbs,Minneapolis,MinnesotaandpartsofMichigan.In1992,thecompanywentpublicandaperiodofexpansionbegan.Kohlsenteredmid-Atlanticmarketsin1997(openinginmanyformerlocationsofClover,anoffshootoftheStrawbridgescorporation,branddepartmentstoresinthePhiladelphiaregion)Texas,MissouriandtheNorthEastin1999GeorgiaandtheSoutheastin2001NewEnglandin2002CaliforniaandtheSouthwestin2003andtheNorthwestin2006. Thechainsexpansionhasmainlyfocusedonthemiddleofthecountryhowever,theyrecentlyexpandedintotheRochesterandBuffalomarketsinWesternNewYork.InApril2005,thecompanyopenedstoresinFloridaandotherSouthernstates. OpeninginJanuary2007isKohlsdesignoffice,tobelocatedintheheartofNewYorksGarmentDistrict.The23,000-square-footfacility,locatedat1359Broadway,isthecompanysfirstproduct-designpresenceinthenationsfashioncapital.
